Why we celebrate:
The Hobo Fest gives us the opportunity to unite many important themes in our country’s history:
?  The importance of the railroad and how it impacted our nation and the economy.
?  Our nation’s struggle to overcome economic depression.
?  The courage and resourcefulness of those that rode the rails seeking work and adventure.
These themes are just as important today as they were in the past!

The lifestyle inspired legends & folk songs
Visit the hobo jungle and experience what life on the rails was like for countless of migrant workers for hundreds of years… Visit with Larry Yaek aka ‘The Michigan Kid’ (we call him A#1) as he shares his personal adventures of life on the rails in 1970s.
Take a ride on CN’s Little Obie. Little Obie is the CN Railroad’s ambassador for the All Aboard for Safety program that draws attention to the importance of safety at railway crossings.

See how the railroad changed the world!
Tour vintage railroad cars. Listen to the tales of life on the rails. Have your photo taken with the Pierre Marquette #1225 that was the model for the steam engine in the classic movie The Polar Express!

Play some really cool games…
Miss Jean aka ‘Kind Lady’ will be here to lead us in some activities she designed to illustrate the hobo lifestyle. This is fun you won’t want to miss.

Create something wonderful with Spam! (the canned meat– not the computer kind…)

Use your culinary or craft talents to create something amazing. If your entry is selected you can win fame and fortune. Ok, not fortune—but fame is good!

Hobo Royalty!

Have you always wanted to rule the world? Would you settle for leading the Owosso Hobo Kingdom? It is much easier than you think. The man or woman, girl and boy who collect the largest amount of $$$ (yes, we mean scratch, bones, dough, CASH) will reign over Owosso’s hobo world for 2008. Quite an honor! (We think so…) By the way, once you are ‘chosen’ you are royalty for LIFE!

Tickets for Diesel-powered Fall Color Trip from Mt. Pleasant to Cadillac Chestnut Festival, October 11th now on sale.

The Steam Railroading Institute will be running a diesel powered Fall Color Excursion between Mt. Pleasant and Cadillac, Michigan.  Due to the fact the costs of operating #1225 to Cadillac this season would be considerable, and that we needed time to complete #1225's annual FRA inspection, Great Lakes Central has graciously offered the use of their diesel.

This has allowed us to keep the trip, which would easily be over $125 a ticket with the #1225, to a more managable price range for our patrons. Tickets are now on sale, with adult tickets priced at $50 and children at $30. The train will leave Mountaintown Station at 9 AM, and arrive at Cadillac at approximately 11:45 AM. There you will be able to attend the Cadillac Annual Chesnut Festival, before reboarding the train at 3 PM for a 5:45 PM arrival at Mt. Pleasant. You may purchase tickets online by clicking our, or contact the Steam Railroading Institute at (989) 725-9464.

The Mountaintown Station is located at 506 W. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, MI.
