Take a short ride on our historic cabooses for an educational experience aboard our “Yard Goat” Demonstration Train! Learn what it took in the golden age of railroading to keep the busy train yards operating like clockwork when the little switcher engines, known as “yard goats,” worked tirelessly around the clock that continues to this very day.
Board the train at the SRI Welcome Center for an approximate 10 to 15-minute, round trip through our yard to the historic New Buffalo Turntable and back. The highlight of course is a ride on the turntable itself! Don’t get too dizzy!
Ride in one of our historic cabooses full of rich history in connection to our Michigan railroading heritage! Lower and upper cupola level seating will be provided as well as an onboard carhost serving as your educational guide during these short trips.
New Buffalo Turntable
Once arriving at our historic turntable, your train will travel right on it to perform a 360-degree spin. This more than a century year old artifact was once a staple in the Pere Marquette yard of New Buffalo during the steam era. Our own 1225 even used this structure on a regular basis!
No advance reservation, first come serve tickets will only be purchased at our Welcome Center on the day of the event only. All trains depart every 30-minutes approximately. The “Yard Goat” will be operated by our diesel-powered switcher.
Covid-19 Safety Procedure
