Climb Aboard!

This holiday season put on your favorite pajamas or 1940s/50s attire and join us for a nostalgic journey to the Christmas of yesteryear when you climb aboard the North Pole Express, pulled by the world-famous Pere Marquette 1225!

Depart from the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso for a four and a half hour, round trip excursion to the Village of Ashley’s Country Christmas. Enjoy a one hour and fifteen-minute train ride each way to and from Ashley, choosing one of our six different classes of service. From vintage coaches to historic cabooses, each offers a different type of comfortable accommodation and Christmas ambiance as the North Pole Express races northward!

Upon arrival at the Village of Ashley’s Country Christmas, disembark for a two-hour Christmas party straight out of the past! Participate in the numerous activities the village has to offer, including live entertainment, having your picture taken in front of the 1225, and meeting Santa Claus himself!

Covid-19 Safety Procedure

The Steam Railroading Institute will follow all local, state, and federal health orders for preventing the spread of Covid-19. Approved face coverings must be worn by all SRI staff/volunteers and passengers, ages two and up, in the SRI Welcome Center and on board the train except when actively eating or drinking. Should guidance or regulations change, we will provide updates regarding additional directives. This requirement is due to our event operating on trains classified as transportation conveyances by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Excursion FAQ

Will Pere Marquette 1225 be pulling the train?

The 1225 is scheduled to power each trip of the North Pole Express to the Village of Ashley Country Christmas. Please note that a diesel locomotive will be on the other end of the train to pull it back to Owosso as there’s no place or time to turn the steam locomotive for the return trip.  However, the Steam Railroading Institute reserves the right to switch out motive power in the event of a rare mechanical issue. We will do everything possible to run the 1225, but a steam locomotive built in 1941 can be unpredictable.

When does the North Pole Express run? How long is the excursion?

The North Pole Express will operate on Saturdays and Sundays starting on November 20th and concluding on December 19th. Two additional excursions will operate on Friday, November 26th. Each excursion is approximately a four-and-a-half-hour experience, with a one hour and fifteen-minute train ride each way and a two-hour layover at the Village of Ashley Country Christmas. While every effort is made to operate on time, the North Pole Express operates over a busy freight railroad that is not controlled by the Steam Railroading Institute. Delays due to railroad congestion are possible.

I’m interested in the Claus Club but have a party of two, will I be seated at a table with another group?

No, but feel free to bring along two more friends! Each ticket in Claus Club includes a table with four seats. If you have less than four in your group, the other seats will remain empty.

Do I need to wear a mask on the train?

Yes. Approved face coverings must be worn by all SRI staff/volunteers and passengers, ages two and up, in the SRI Welcome Center and on board the train except when actively eating or drinking. This requirement is due to our event operating on trains classified as transportation conveyances by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Do I need to purchase a ticket for my child?

Children 19 months and up require a ticket to ride the North Pole Express. Infants 18 months and under may sit on a parent's lap without purchasing a ticket.

Can I bring my stroller?

Strollers must meet the following qualifications:

  • Strollers must be 25lbs or less and be able to fold up.
  • Double and triple strollers are not permitted.
  • Strollers must be easily lifted onto the train.
  • Strollers that do not meet the qualifications will be denied access to the train.

Are the Pere Marquette Parlours available to anyone?

Our Pere Marquette Parlours are an adult only class, ages 18 or older. The rest of our class options are available for all ages. The Parlours are also not handicap accessible. Due to the staircase to the upper level seating, this option is not recommended for anyone with any walking difficulties.
