Are there restrooms on the train?
Nearly every car has its own restroom facility. If a car does not have an operational restroom, the next car ahead or behind you will.
Are you wheel chair accessible?
The Steam Railroading Institute’s grounds and equipment are not fully handicap accessible due to the historical preservation nature of our property and equipment. Please provide prior notification to the SRI staff of any special physical needs that are required by a patron visiting or riding the train.
Are your excursions Round-Trip?
Yes, all our excursions are round-trip.
Can I bring a stroller?
Strollers must be 25 lbs. or less and fold up. Due to lack of storage space and the fact they must be lifted on and off the train, strollers must be light weight. Strollers that are too large and or heavy will be denied access, double and triple strollers are highly discouraged as they typically exceed the weight limit.
Can we get a refund or reschedule?
We offer refund protection insurance that is available at the time of your purchase at $30 per order. ALL sales are final unless Refund Protection Insurance is purchased before the sale is completed (Refund Protection Insurance will allow for a full refund up to 72 hours before event). Due to the nature of our excursions and the large volume of orders and typically sold out trips, we cannot offer refunds or make considerations. Please feel free to check with friends, colleagues, or family members to see if tickets can be exchanged (Please call WhistleTix at (989)-399-7589 to transfer tickets to a new name, e-mail and, phone number).
How do I keep track of upcoming excursions/events?
All excursions and events will be announced with detailed information on our website as well as on our social media pages; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. You can also sign up to our E-Newsletter or become an SRI member to get instant notifications on all upcoming trips.
How do I purchase tickets?
Tickets can be purchased on our website or by calling our ticket agent, WhistleTix at (989)-399-7589. PLEASE NOTE: All advance ticket purchases will include a processing fee.
May I bring my own cooler with drinks and snacks on the train?
For security reasons and space constraints, we ask that no coolers be brought on the train. We allow outside snacks to be brought onboard, otherwise please visit our concessions car for snacks and beverages. PLEASE NOTE: ABSOLUTELY NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES MAY BE BROUGHT ON AND WILL BE CONFISCATED. Some of our trips will have a bar available during the trip.
The excursion I want to ride is now sold out, can you add more coaches or another trip?
While we would love to add additional cars and trips for all our sold-out excursions/events, the possibilities to accomplish this can be extremely limited. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization with volunteers operating on a host railroad. Notifications will be made if additional cars and trips can and will be added.
We received eight inches of snow, are the trains still running?
All train will continue to run unless otherwise; snow, rain or shine. Please remember that tickets are non-refundable so please plan your trip accordingly. Unless there is a State of Emergency declared by local or state government forbidding us from operating, we will run your trip. If your trip is unable to run due to a situation beyond our control, we’ll do our best to contact you and offer a full refund of your tickets or possibly reschedule your trip.
What are the seating arrangements?
Our seating arrangements are like airline and charter bus seating. Our coaches are historic 1940's/50's built passenger cars with a single center aisle and two seats on either side of the aisle with groups of four. Seating assignments will be arranged, and we will do the best we can to accommodate parties at that time of boarding. The Steam Railroading Institute staff and volunteers try to the best of our ability to accommodate special requests but may not always be able to do so.
What is the cost for children?
Our policy is 18 months and under may sit on parent’s lap and do not require a ticket. Everyone else is required to purchase a ticket as they are sold by seat.
What should I wear?
We strongly encourage that visitors and passengers wear comfortable clothes based on the weather for your respected trip.
Where, when and how do I receive my tickets once they’re purchased?
The email confirmation you receive at the time of your purchase will serve as your reservation until the day of your trip. A second email will be sent prior to your respected trip with further instructions on parking, ticket pick-up, boarding location, etc. Upon your arrival at your departure location, we ask that you arrive an hour before your trip, you will pick up your tickets at our will call box office; which will either be in our Welcome Center if the trip is departing from the Steam Railroading Institute, or directly in front of the train boarding area. Please provide the last name of the purchaser and confirmation number.
Will the Pere Marquette 1225 be pulling the train for each event?
It usually depends on the type of excursions that are operating and whether we can ensure that the 1225 will be operational for the trip. Sometimes there are situations that are beyond our control and therefore the Steam Railroading Institute must reserve the right to change out motive power or rolling stock at any time. Please read the detailed information about each excursion/event on our website to see if PM 1225 or another locomotive will be operating the train.
